RTL saves our large octo on film set, twice..

Hey again all, hope youre all enjoying some good flying. We've just arrived back from a commercial shoot in Johannesburg for a live tv production, filming night aerials for the live intro sequence. Using our SteadiDrone EI8HT Ultra, running APM2.5, like all our systems, we were shooting a long tracking shot around 20-50m high and around 100-200m long, at night with only two LED strips for guidance. Ive shot a lot of very challenging stuff for produtions, inside very tight dark casinos, right above rollercoasters etc, and this was no different, challenging..After a few runs I started pushing the shot to pretty much just before I lost visuals of the LEDs, ( wind was gusting around 30-40 kmh) then, I lost her, lost sight of LED and the wind took her, I calmly ( comes with a lot of practice and experience lol) flipped to RTL, and hoped it would return, which it did! I was not suprized rather releaved, and this happened twice and RTL saved the day (night) again. Due to the required shot needed we were pushing our range but due to (a lot) of testing, and the superb APM + 2.8.1, we did not loose our rig.My reason for posting this is to again commend the devs and people who make this all happen, yes ones success and results are very much got to do with your rig, frame, setup, testing, but without great code to run it all, pretty useless. Also want to remind and urge you guys to always setup and test your RTL, wait for gps lock before taking off and using a high quality airframe does not hurt ;)For more info on the SteadiDrone EI8HT Ultra and our other RTF kits and airframes check out www.SteadiDrone.com, feel free to get in touch for advise and tips with APM on larger drones.Happy flying!Duran.
