Skywalker in fiberglass motor choice?

First want to say hi. I am just getting started. I Ordered the APM2 purple full kit last week and am just getting started on a plane.

I ordered this plane Skywalker in fiberglass (see below). I was sent to this from the link in the manual for configuration files for common air frames. It looked good so I ordered one.

Like many others I am looking for endurance and lifting capacity. Wondering if anyone could help me with a motor and propeller choice for this plane. Not looking for cheap, I would like the most efficient combination. Planning on running on 3 cell lipo unless there is an advantage to run 4 cells.

Thanks in advance!!!

Ryan

  • Motor and prop choice on this plane are actually quite challenging.

If your not heavy lifting, it will fly with just about anything, but to really lift some weight findingt the right motor / prop is a bit of a challenge.

It can only spin a relatively small prop 10" max but 9" standard so to push enough air you need to run a 3 or 4 blade prop.

None of the motors have specs for 3 or 4 blade props so this can mean finding one that will put enough load on the motor to remain efficient requires a little trial and error.
What is needed is a medium torque, high RPM motor spinning a 3 or 4 blade prop.

    Ideally 1500 to 1800kv that can spin a 10" 3 blade prop @ 500w to 800w

There aren't actually many motors that can do this, but if anyone can make any good suggestions, I'd be keen to know about it as well.

I'm running an 950kv emax motor on mine at the moment, but even with a 4 blade prop, the motor is not working enough so I'm wasting the weight of the motor.

  • Have you flown RC planes before? If you haven't I would suggest stepping down to a foam one before going into your fiber glass. I went with a foam am glad I did because it is very forgiving. Just something to consider.
