On the shield is a slide switch next to the dip switch's can anyone tell me what this does and or what position this switch should be in?

You've posted in the Ardupilot original forum, but I'm going to guess you mean the ardupilot mega.
That is the CLI switch, which used to be used to change from flight mode to setup/test mode in the termial.
It is no longer used, the change between those modes is now handled in the software.
