Sony Nex 5 camera vs. GoPro 3

I'm trying to put together an aerial video rig and need to decide which camera would be appropriate so I can make decisions regarding the rest of my hardware needed.  The Go Pro 3 and Sony Nex 5 (or Nex 3) are in my price range and I'm wondering what you guys think is the best value.  I want to get some good quality video showcasing pieces of land from a gimbal mount.  So essentially, what will I get by choosing one over the other?

In addition to all arguments that have been posted I would add one in favor of the NEX option: you can use it as a regular camera in your daily life to take pictures when you are not using it on a drone!

Look at this video I made with a next:

  • I've used the GoPro and haven't been real happy with it.  I bought a Liquid Image Ego that's a lot cheaper and I've found does a much better job when used with an anti jello mount.

  • Weight is important: GoPro

    SLR features important: Nex5

    4K or 120fps important: GoPro

Accurate framing: GoPro + FPV switcher. (there is an option now for nex5 though)

Colour balance important: Nex5* (*if you know what you're doing!)

Portability between wings & quads: GoPro

Low RF noise is important: Nex5

No Fisheye or long zoom important: Nex5

No vignetting is important*: GoPro (*Nex5 - standard lens only)

    Protective equipment available: GoPro
