Will go th RC route first then add controller for UAV capability. Id get a bigger battery (2200MAh) and a couple spares. Also a spare ESC, when I first started I smoked a couple ESCs just plugging them in and Im still not sure how that happened. I also recommend the Bixler/Sky Surfer APM chassis from the DIY Drones store. Even without an APM installed it gives a good place to mount the camera for pan/tilt.
