What´s the solution if we don´t want the UAV returning to the launch point, i.e. when we are in a moving vehicle?

Does the UAV follows the radio signal of the TX?
I´ve seen mobile phone apps, but I think they have very limited range.
In a real application I don´t want the UAV following the pilot all the time, but when FAIL SAFE is engaged, return manually or set automatically a new landind point (where the TX is i.e.)
