I recently became the owner of a TI MSP430 based RF development system as a give-away at a seminar. I have augmented it with the TI RF amplifier for greater range.TI use a proprietary communication protocol, but it is on the regular 2.4GHz band. I am implementing a telemetry link using this eqipment. It is low cost, low power and the MSP430 is an excellent 16 bit software platform with good development toolsThis could end up being a more cost-effective alternative to using Zigbee modules. My telemetry system is designed to use a TDMA type data structure and is intended to terminate in some form of helmet mounted display.

MSP430 are eccellent MCU's - in fact they are even in space (see cubesat projects).
Are you overlaying the telemetry onto a videostream in the HMD or some using some sort of instrument panel type of solution?
