Telemetry basics

Hi all, I'm new to the world of RC robotics and I want to make a RC fixed wing plane capable of providing live video feed and capturing images.

I'll be using ArduPilot as the autopilot. And I'll be using a wifi module(most probably ubiquiti bullet M5) for the link between my UAV and laptop. I'll have a Rasberry Pi 2 + RPi camera module for getting the images and video feed. Now my question is, and sorry if I sound really noob-ish, how does the telemetry work? I mean how will I get the data from my UAV on my Laptop? Is there a software that I have to install that will receive the data?
