Telemetry range problem (graph included)

Hi,

I'm using 3DR 433 MHz telemetry radio. Transmit power is set to 14 dBm 25 mW duty cycle is 10%. These are max settings in my country. I'm using stock blue dotted antennas. How much range should i expect?

I'm getting little bit over 100 m range before signal loss. Air Speed have to be atleast 96 otherwise I can't send or receive waypoints. Attached is my telemetry graph.

  • what kind of antenna do you have?
I bought the telemetry radio kit from Rctimer. The kit also included the antennas.
I too have experienced problems with the telemetry.
I later discovered that the antennas were tuned to 2.4 GHz.
Basically it was like to have no antenna at all.
If you do not have suitable tool to check the antennas, try to put a cable  exactly long 17.32 cm (length of antenna tuned to 433 MHz) output from the center pin of the radios SMA, and do a test

    • Hi,

I have stock antennas that came with radios. Radios were bought from 3DR so i Think these should be for 433 MHz (Blue dots). I'm going to buy two SRH-771 antennas and see what happens.

      • Hi kopo,

same problem here. 433 MHz. Blue dotted antennas. I don't get even more than 30 meters with standard settings (IRIS+).

Did you finally solve your range issues?

        • I'm no longer working with that project and I didn't check the range with two SRH-771s. Winter came, waters froze. :)

  • Can anyone help? it doesn't matter if I set power level to 8 or 14 dBm. I still get about the same range. My "rover" is device that moves on water surface. Antenna is about 15 cm above water.

    • First test with full range (+20dBm, 100% duty cycle, 30 channels, 414-454MHz). That will give full picture of performance. If this will be satisfactory - you'll cut down parameters.

Short test - especially in open area - won't hurt anyone.

      Cheers

      MK

      • What do you mean by cutting parameters? Send less parameters or adjust telemetry settings?

        • Adjust telemetry settings and then - if it'll be necessary - cut down data throughput.

But first start with full range and present your results.

          • I have not tested the radios with full power since it's against regulations. I got my hands on one SRH771 antenna. it's 40 cm long, 2,15 dBi. I put the antenna on the water rower and my range increased from 100 m to over 250 m.

It is good improvement, but I need about 1000 m range. Would my range double if both my antennas were SRH771?

            • With full power we had around 1.6km range with gound-air link.

I would not expect 1km range with so much limited power.

Instead of buing antennas make simple dipole or GP basing on RC Groups/YouTube tutorials and check.
