Trying in flight tuning

I've been flying fine with the standard parameters on my 3DR stock frame with stock motors and small pan/roll gopro mount.

Now I want to experiment with inflight tuning. I'm not sure if I got it right so before I take off and cause a crash I thought I would check in and get some advice.

What I did.

Switched to CLI mode, and entered terminal and then setup / tune 4 (I understand that is the most useful to tune)

On my JR R921 receiver I connected aux 3 to channel 6 on APM. This way I could use the small knob on right side of JR x9503 Tx. It's the only available adjustable type of knob I have and it's location is very good to adjust during flying.

After doing this I went to test / tune and I could see the numbers change as I moved the knob but the change seems too dramatic. It goes from 0 to about 2.45. If I understand this correctly this normally is set to .145 so my question is how much of a change will cause a noticeable change in stability?

It just concerned the adjustment will be to dramatic. I tried changing my travel adjustment on the Tx and that did cut off the top end so that it would only go up to say 1.0 which I guess would allow finer scale movement but what range is a good testing range? 0-?

Also I wanted to disable it so I entered tune 0 in setup and it said disabled but then I went to test:tune and could see the numbers still moving when I moved the dial. Is that correct? I went back and it said it was disabled and I entered test 0 again to make sure but the numbers still change when I'm in test:tune

Thanks for any help :)

  • Anyone tried inflight tuning that can help?

  • I also tried leaving it enabled and then entering flight mode, connecting and then went to the configuration screen to see if I could see the dial change the rate but it stayed at .145

Where can I see the change so when I find a good setting, I can fix it?
