Tuning for Solar Aircraft

As some of you may know, me and a mate successfully built a solar drone.(http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/lusa-low-cost-unmanned-solar?id=705844%3ATopic%3A445243&page=2#comments), now we bought APM2.0 hoping to improve its flight time thanks to the better precision of the new autopilot (we still use aardupilot 2.6 with thermopiles).

We need some suggestion for tuning it, considering the following:

- the plane is pretty short

- a great part of its weight is in the wings

- it has small moving surfaces

- the angle where it can fly safely is pretty small

- the power is barely enough to keep it airborne

Thankyou in advance to whoever will help us :-)

  • Are you using the apm autopilot? I am working on my first drone and I am programming the thing from the ground up - with much help from the people on this site. I would start by just trying to get the plane in sustained, level flight to see how well your PID controller works.Use your remote to fly it up there and flip on the autopilot and see what happens. Hopefully it should fly level and straight. If that works, run the portion of the code that uses your gps coordinates to set the attitude of the plane. use the code to ensure that the required attitude is never too steep
