Twin motors: Same direction or opposite directions?

HI,

I am building a twin motors plane.

I was searching if I have to set up the motors to spin in same directions or opposite directions.

I was reading that if they will be in same directions, the plane will go a little bit in the same direction of the spin that's why I have to adjust the rudder but I will lose more flight duration.

But If i do them in the opposite directions, the plane will go straight and no need for any rudder adjustment.

Is it correct?

  • On a model plane you'll find the difference to be negligible. The reason some full sized light twin engine airplanes have counter rotating propellers is to improve their single engine performance. You will never be operating your model with a motor failure, and if you ever have to without practicing the use of your rudder you will likely find yourself in all kinds of trouble. If you ever have a motor failure and you are actually able to identify the problem, the best thing you can do it cut the throttle and glide. Maybe you could start feeding in a little throttle to extend your glide but you must remember to use rudder trim to counter the asymmetrical thrust, not aileron.
Sorry to get off on a tangent. If you do choose to go with counter rotating propellers, make sure they the top of the prop are rotating towards the plane.
