Two crashes with my IRIS+

Hi. I got my IRIS+ about two months ago and had about 20 great flights with it. But two days ago the big troubles suddenly came up. I had two crashes, the first with just a prop damage, the second was far worse with a broken arm and two broken long legs.

1st crash:

I was flying for about 12 minutes when the copter suddenly started drifting strongly towards a building near it. I tried to pull to the oposite side but then it started turning, I again gave it full power to the opposite, managed to get it away from the building while it was going downwards strongly and hit the ground. As I already mentioned the damage was not so big. I replaced the props and went on to the second flight. This all happened out of LOITR Mode.

2nd crash:

After the first crash I had a short flight where I felt the quad drifting a bit too much and let it land, then I started flight nr. 24, flew around in STD mode, went up to about 100m and made a couple of overhead shots of the area. Then I put it in return to home to see if everything was good in that area. IRIS+ went up a bit, came back to the starting-point area and started descending. At about 4m height I put it back in STD mode, because I wanted to land it safely. At about 1,5m height (so almost "home"), it started drifting to one side (no wind), I pushed the right stick a bit, and a bit more, and more, until it was fully to the side to keep the IRIS+ in the same place, then it held position for a couple of seconds and after that it went into suicide mode... up to about 3m, started spinning around, not reacting to my commands at all and crashed about 20m away pretty dramatically. The result is one broke arm and two broken long legs - I have no clue if the gimbal is ok - I hope so!

It would be great if someone who has the expertise could look into the log files and tell me what could have happened. I am posting Log files 22&24. nr. 23 was no crash, just a short flight (if needed, I can post it).

thank you!

  • Another possibility to look

3701942547?profile=originalA mechanical failure?, looks here http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/common-diagnosing-problems-using-l...

    • well that is also what I fear. How can I narrow this down? If it was an mag interference, thank nothing can be done about it... but if it is mechanical then something has to be repaired....

      • Sorry my horrible english, your log said that you have mag problems but it doesn't looks that It was the crash problem, it's looks that, or you have a motor-esc failure or you enter in panic and you crashes the copter, I did it when my copter was trying to land (not your case) but I didn't know and try to correct it and crashes (all in few seconds), or a radio problem as Michael said but I don't know how to check in the logs but not a failsafe because you don't have any RTL (if you have your failsafe correct programed) Are you using a ground station?

  • 3701942331?profile=originalI'm not an expert, only trying to help, looks your mag from line 40, It's possible that exists any mag interference where you was flying?, the two crashes were in the same place ? when you repair your IRIS can you fly on an open place and chek your log?

If you have bad gps your RTL don't work and buildings produce gps glitches, be carefull.

    • Hi. The two crashes happened in different places. the second place was a buidling site. nothing near for about 200-300m

  • Both flights look good.  In both cases it looks like you cut the throttle and the copter fell to the ground.

The second one throttle went to full and then later went all the way down.

The drift in the first flight maybe causes by poor GPS signal as you were close to losing it.  The building may have blocked one of the satellites.

If you didn't cut the throttle you may want to check your radio.

    • Yes he has gps glitch but he wasn't using the GPS he was in alt hold except when he was in RTL,  ; it's strange that log don't shows any ERR, perhaps see something that mention Michael too, but check your compass too.

    • Hi. It all happened pretty fast, but I do not think that I cut the throttle. Besides that, shouldn't the IRIS+ engage return to home if the radio is gone?

How can I test the radio?

      Thank you!

      • and thank you both very much for looking into this!

  • 3701942177?profile=originalIt's look that you have compass problems in the two logs, looks links that I posted here http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/arducopter-3-2-1-beta-testing?id=...

Did you attached a new metal thing to your Iris?
