Two stage take-off and hover approach

I'm having a hard time finding the right words here, can you help me out?

I'm interested in flying a UAV (rotor or fixed-wing, electric or gas is fine) to a waypoint and then switching off the primary power.  From then on I want to dynamically fill a balloon for pseudo stationary lift so it could remain at the location for an extended period.  Primary systems could kick in to return to base or to adjust when outside a wandering threshold.

What do you call this and can anyone point me to their work?

The flip side would be taking a weather balloon to outer limits then switching to electric to get into space - but that's another question ;-)

  • This sounds like an awesome idea Tyler, especially considering the average sort of airtime UAV's can get.
Fixed wing might work better from my understanding, you will be able to get further which makes more sense for your purpose.
Compressed helium in the fuselage, which then gets released into a balloon? (what's the lift rate of helium?)
When you're done, either use a servo to release or rocket ignition and a few match heads to burn the nylon strings off?
Is that what you're kinda thinking?
