UAV camera control question

Hi,

I want to do something but don't know how, please can someone give me some ideas?

We will start building an UAV Plane next month that will carry a CX760 camera, mainly because it has a very good stabilization system even with the optical zoom at max, that is a must for a UAV. I will be using ardupilot and the frame will be probably a Mugin from fpvflying.com.

Anyway, I'm still looking for ideas, and one thing that I need is the following. I want to control the camera (I already have the IR that controls zoom, etc) both tilt and pan from about 2-5km and I want to use a USB Surveillance camera joystick like this one: axis-t8311-joystick-500.jpg

Or even a standard USB Joystick for games, doesn't matter. What I need is that a second operator can control the camera pan, tilt and zoom. I really don't have any idea how to do it, I don't want to use a RC Radio like Spektrum or Futaba because I want to keep the interface simple, just a joystick that the person can use. The joystick will be connected on the GCS notebook of course... with the plane itself I will be using APM + RFD900 + 1.3GHZ FPV and antenna tracker for both.

Can someone help me on this?

Thanks!

  • First off, what gimbal setup are you planning on using for the CX760?

If your PT gimbal is servo-driven, then you can simply control those servos through the ArduPlane Mission Planner software with the USB Joystick.  This happens over your RFD900 setup.   Take a look at this page from the ArduPlane wiki: http://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/Joystick

I hope this helps some.  Let us know how all of this turns out!
