I am working on a class assignment about community driven innovation and have
chosen the UAV community as my subject. When it comes to UAVs I don't
have any experience, or much knowledge, but would love to learn more. In
the past I have flown a lot of RC airplanes, so I know a little bit
about all the ingenious innovations that the community comes up with.
So, to get my paper started I was hoping that you could help me with
some input.
Here are some concrete questions, but if you have any other input that
could be useful I'd love to hear it.
1. Do you have any examples of innovations done in the UAV community
that have either been adopted by commercial actors, or that have been
the source of a startup company?
2. Do you have any examples of innovations done by the community that
push the limits beyond what we see in the commercial/military UAV
industry?
3. Do you have any examples of people from the industry that are active
in the community?
(I have cross posted this question here and in http://www.rcgroups.com/forums)
Best regards,
Kjartan

2) The amateurs are leading the way in quadcopters, with the Mikrokopter community out of Germany as a good example. Elsewhere, the amateurs are pushing the boundaries of price, which a very important dimension. Open source projects are often 1/10 to 1/100th the cost of equivalent commercial alternatives.
3) I don't understand that question.
