Understanding altitude

This weekend I was flying in an area where ground level was 99 meters.

I have the "absolute alt" box unchecked.  I verified that multiple times.

When I read the waypoints from the APM to set my home position, I could not get my home altitude to be 0.  It would always be 99.

When I flew, I programmed my waypoints at 30 meters.  The mission planner would announce my altitude always around 129 meters even though the plane (Easystar clone) was definately around 30 meters.

Is this normal behavior?

Why won't the mission planner announce the true altitude over ground?

It seems like I'm at "absolute alt" and can't get off it.

on the planner screen home alt will always be the asl .. ie 99m.

to make it say agl you need to click "set home alt" on the flight data tab before taking off. this makes everything relative to you current altitude.
