Use of Mission Planner with PX4 firmware

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this question or if what I am asking seems a little silly.

I have a firefly6 tiltrotor airframe which came with modified MP software.  I would like to switch to standard mission planner as I have been using that for some time and I am surprised at how many of the parameters have been hidden in the modified version. I note that there is no release yet for this kind of vtol using standard MP but there is firmware developed by PX4 which can be uploaded using QGroundControl.

If I was to use this modified firmware could I then use MP to plan and execute mapping missions? 

It is not clear to me just how closely related all of the various code forks are.
