Vertical Landing

I want to land a plane nose-first by spinning a propeller backwards to lessen its vertical acceleration. The propeller may need to be coaxial so as to minimize angular momentum. Perhaps an airbag or such low tech-fixes as a mat on the grand or a padded nose would be needed to make this landing feasible.Coupled some sort of DGPS station at the point of landing, I feel that this could greatly decrease the area required for landing. Has it ever been tried?

  • Sound interesting.... but how will you conrol the pitching effect of external forces such as wind? If the aircraft is in a vetical position the wings and horizontal stabilizer will have a huge sail effect. There won't be any slipstream over the tail surfaces for control if the propeller is spinning backwards... actually the prop "may" be dragging a small amount over them in the reverse direction!

    I say good luck to you. Good to see different ideas but that looks like a tough one to me.

  • Landing nose first is not easy as a technical venture but you have the right ideas so far. Reverse thrust has been done by Bill from UDB.

    A slow vertical landing is usually by parachute like Krzysztof's Pteryx. A fast vertical landing is called a crash.
