What are the bare essentials required?

Hello,I am a high school student in the U.S. and I am very interested in UAVs as I would like to go into that career soon. Sadly, I have no knowledge about what are the bare essentials required to get my plane into the air (autopilot, FPV cameras, etc.). Also, what are the pieces that make for a good ground station? I have a limited budget so if you make recommendations for parts please keep this in mind.-p.s. I have extensive knowledge on aerodynamics, so that is not a problem. :)

If cost is an issue, I would try and source the r/c gear required second hand eBay or Craigslist for example.
