Why always omnidirectional antennas ?

Hi there,reading in this antenna section, I was thinking that omnidirectional antennas are not really very efficent for UAVs, but a directional antenna with reflector should deliver much better results:1. Once the UAV is in the air, a directional antenna with reflector in the ground station would not send 50% of its energy into the ground, but most of it into the sky, to the UAV. And during take off the UAV is anyway nearby.2. We usually look into the direction where our UAV is flying (Ok for FPV it might be a different story or those pilots should learn to turn into the right direction) , so that a directional antenna should deliver really good results.3. For the UAV itself those conditions are also valid once its in the air.Has someone here tried directional antennas for UAV's ?I once made an aerial for DVT-B (Digital TV) a so called Double Quadrat Antenna : <><>This double quad with reflector had around 14 or 16 db, if I remember right and the antenna radiation pattern looked a bit like an egg,with the blunt end on the antenna. Behind the reflector was also a tiny mirrored egg shape.Only at 90 and 270 degrees was no signal. For 2.4 Ghz a double quad antenna (Lambda/4) would have only 3cm (1.18") sides. This could fit below the base plate of a big or midsize quad using the base plate as a reflector.

  • Once again fantastic explanation and I could wrap my head around it. I did some more reading and now I'm wondering what would stop me from taking two transmitters that operate in the range of one antenna and having them both go to one antenna instead of the two rubber antennas that came with my video/osd and 3dr radio transmitters. One transmitter is 915MHz and the other transmitter is 5705-5945. As long as the frequency range is covered what would stop you seeing they both have identical antennas? I'm curious because I want to use a blade UAV antenna that covers that range.

  • This is very interesting and I could totally wrap my head around the explanation. If I may, I'd like to put a scenario forward to help me. I have to install a video transmitter "3D Video/OSD kit", 3DR Radio Set "data" in a brand new build. Would the omni directional antenna or standard straight rubber antenna be best? It will be going into a custom build which encloses all components except the antenna. The TX components are housed in a formula of carbon fiber infused with shielding to minimize interference. I understand your explanation very well however I am stuck trying to pull the trigger so to speak. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or advice you may have. Again your explanation was great.
