My laptop has 3 regular usb ports and one SATA/usb port. When I plugged the ground module in that port it fired right up, installed the driver and I was able to connect. I rebooted afterwards as I think my use of sleep mode and constant swapping of usb devices somehow fubard the COM assignments or the flux capacitor.
It's a FTDI device, providing a USB serial interface. My Windows7 box recognised it and auto-installed the driver, so I didn't need to download anything, but it looks like the driver is available on the FTDI website.

I hate it when the flux capacitor screws up.
