Won't throttle down except in acro mode

If I throttle up past around 50% in loiter, stabilize, altitude and pos. hold modes and then throttle down to zero, power continues to the motors indefinitely unless I go into Acro mode (and land mode, I think). Once I change modes into Acro the power drops immediately. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix? Thanks
