XBEE RC control

Hello people!

I want to make an UAV but because of the components i want to use i neead a really low current consumption. So i was thinking, what if i take out the RC receiver and make the control using the XBee Pro 900. Meaning: using the XBee for telemetry and UAV control (with a joystick from the computer for take off, landing and other control.
My question is, do you think is this possible? Will i have any unpleasant problems?

Thanks, looking forward for answers :)

People have tried this (see Jack Crossfire's posts) but with limited success. Latency can be an issue. Also this won't work with ArduPilot because it only has one serial port and Rx is used for GPS.
