To early to invest in Linux?

Inspired by Chris Anderson's key note at InterDrone, I was thinking my next controller should be a Linux variant; something like a Firecape - but is it still early and I'm in for a world of pain?

Hi,

One of the selling points of the Pixhawk, apart from being excellent, is it '32-bit failsafe co-processor' - but how do I test it, or know what it does?

Is there a routine I can simulate to test it?
