From a Guardian report:

"Two official safety inquiries took place into the military use of drones over southern England after near-collisions with helicopters, the Guardian can reveal.

The investigations are the first of their kind involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are increasingly being flown in British civilian airspace after extensive use in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The inquiries by Airprox, the body that investigates reports of near-collisions, relate to flights on 12 February by a Desert Hawk 3 (DH3) drone owned and used by the army. The drone was being flown in military airspace over Salisbury Plain and operated from the ground.

In each case Airprox concluded that action taken by the operator on the ground prevented collision with the helicopter. "

@Rory Paul "..foam all over the place..."
    LMAO, LOL & CO
On a serious note, they have kevlar underbelly.
So all left would be 3x12 inch kevlar cloth pressure-molded around one of the blades.
Apache blades are said to be able to take at last single 23mm hole per blade - but it might be propaganda+wishful research as well.

No if you click the second link on my blog you will see its in the ranges proper. Its the link I tried to post above. Not sure why it does not work out of here.
  • I hope that isn't where I think it is as not only do I walk regularly near there but I and many others (including model clubs). I have had the Apache appear over the hedge enclosure in Keevil when going to the strip and crapped myself, awesome sight though.

Oh it works from here http://www.suasnews.com/2010/10/2110/airprox-between-desert-hawk-3-... second one in. I heard about this a while ago but sort of forgot ;-) Its great that the CAA and military are talking and resolving. I was invited to a conference at RAF Waddington earlier this year and lots of things were discussed. The military here are keen to talk to sUAS operators here and share. Its all good.

Would have been a real mess if one of these Desert Hawks had hit an Apache....foam all over the place...
