7W boosters for OpenLRS Project

Hi Guys

Good news from OpenLRS (Opensource Long Range System) project!

Today i received 7 watt RF booster chips and at last i'm ready to finishing the PCB designs. This weekend i will finish the booster design and PCBs will be ready in 3 weeks.

Here is the latest PCB designs of Tx, Rx and IMU modules of OpenLRS

Tx and Rx modules size smaller than most of RC modules. Rx module including I2C (or 3 adc) conector pads on back side. I'm planning to connect my new 6DOF IMUnext v3 board there. Rx can stabilize the plane (or quadro) without any external parts and it sends the parameters to the ground over telemetry system. And Rx's rs232 port already available for digital telemetry or direct GPS connection.

Some advantages of OpenFARC:

  • Direct ground computer based remote control and telemetry (Autopilot by computer?)
  • Rx based Autopilot/stabilization/return to home.
  • No Frequency hoping. I'm planning to using static 2 frequency switching for safety. You can use 2 or more modules for receiving the telemetry signals or transmitting the controls with static frequency, because you know your frequencies. Or hopping already possible.
  • If you want to use it for really long range, you can add 7W booster on Tx module (only one way control without telemetry)
  • Direct analog RSSI output on Rx
  • RS232 telemetry and commandset (like "S2512" mean turn the 2th servo to center position, etc)

I'm developing OpenLRS project with AVR-GCC on Atmega328 chipset. All ATMEL developers are welcome ;)

  • @john
    I'm not talking about telemetry.
I'm designing OpenLRS for amateur uavs. And you need static frequency for using 2+ device on same time.
Mean, you have 2 ground station on A and B coordinates and you have 2 pilot with standard transmitters for landing. You can follow the plane and control by GS when flying and plane can take off from A and landing to B.

Dynamic frequency hopping only good for Rc hobby. I need a littlebit extra for making bigger things ;)
  • i don't understand 100% why the frecuency must be static for using the telemetry,

FrSky use FHSS for both ways without problems

  • Actually OpenFARC spelling "Open Far C" and I just searched the FARC and saw some sexy armed girls. Ok they are small armed group from 60's and they are communist but not important for most us.

But, we are very sensitive about "feeling teroristy" words, because my country fighting with terrorism of PKK since 30 years and 40.000 people killed from both side in this period. I understand the point and I will change the name immediately.

I like the OpenFRAC words because FRAC's mean F**K in Battlestar Galactica series and very cool name but "Open FRAC" is looking like "public sex" :)

I will choose OpenLRS name after this time, and i will change the all posts. I hope LRS is not a terrorist group or religion name ;)

    @Jhon,

That is the point. I hate the cable scrap too and this is why i'm integrating everything in small size.  My plan is using the stabilized plane by radio like "roll 15 degree and keep it this position" like commands by ground computer without extra rc equipments or wirings.

GPS or other serial sensors will connect from serial port of OpenLRS (pins on top and right side), but IMU using I2C protocol and their pads on the bottom of board. I can resize the PCB to pins for I2C at last makeup.

PS: please don't comment about project name anymore.

  • thats cool, IMU and Rx packed! thats so nice, i love tidy setups, not 200 cables inside the plane,
just like the OSD, GPS and OSD are one module ;)

but... this also means the Rx will be an autopilot too? or are you planing an external autopilot board?

if you connect IMU in the port, where must be connected the GPS so Rx can perform a RTH? at the same por too?

i keep thinking your transmitter module must be packet in a Jr and Futaba case, this will boost the sell without any doubt ;)

    something like that,

  • Switch the A and R, Far Radio Aerial Control (FRAC).  That is less terroristy

  • Didn't expect this many complete and utter prudes on DIYDrones.... lol

It's just a word, its only what you make of it.

  • Melih, I love the name!

Not sure if its the best choice but I would certainly buy one purely based on the name alone LOL :)

  • OpenLRRC(long range rc) maybe?

  • I too think FARC is a unacceptable name for this project if you take the historical meaning of FARC into account...

  • Hello sir, do you know the meaning of the letters "FARC"???
