  • Trying to sum up all the replies here because of the way this forum works.....

Stephen Carlson - Lots of good points for sure. Sense and avoid technology, and I agree with the harm a knee jerk reaction can do, as another poster said, this has been coming down the pike for years..... Most don't see it until it knocks at their door. I am concerned about the regs coming down as well, for both sides. In fact, the recreational FPV and UAV users are on the same side as all modelers.....period! We really should be all using our models on designated land, not over populated areas, because things do happen, but in that sense we are the same.

Bart - The human controlled planes may be considered safer by some, and not others, all I can say is the pilot and the years of experience and skill it requires to hover a 40% 150CC aerobat or fly that F-14 is "Top  of the Food Chain" in modeling.....these guys are good and can move quick in an emergency and are light on their feet, that being said, flying a 35lb Jet at 220MPH is somewhat inherently dangerous and needs some safe guards around it for sure…….we have those within the AMA safety code. I am glad you guys are safe in Canada, and LOTS of good technology comes from there, but FYI…..the general public thinks the guy at the Brooklyn bridge comes from YOUR side, not mine…..he is a modeler, yes, but FPV and the like came from the UAV side…..let’s face it, the IDIOT in ARZ that just shot some senators did the same thing for the gun owners in the USA as that guy did for you and me! Misuse of a perfectly good tool…almost ANYTHING used incorrectly can cause harm……which is why myself and most AMA members do NOT thing the answer is tons of new REGS!

Duane Brocious – Taking pictures of the roof and other commercial uses for your technology IS the issue. DO NOT be fooled. The pressure from the industry in the USA on the FAA is the driving force behind this, they have left us “Toy Plane” flyers alone for the last 100 years +…..and let’s all remember, the USA military has purchased more UN-manned planes than manned planes for the second or third year in a row…some of these UAV assets are the most requested in the theater of war…..the migration of these technologies to civilian use is inevitable, and it is OUR job to work together to stop all the rhetoric and hate and work together to have sensible controls and rules around this stuff…as you point out and is so often the case, the USA lags the world in this area, big surprise! And just for the record, the mega rockets were heavily regulated, and they did not like it one bit, but hey, I can see it when they can reach 30,000 feet, come on, it was necessary……and your right, some guy who spends $30K on a model would toss his mother under the bus to keep his freedoms in this country, as they are being chipped away at day by day from our friends in DC…..

Gary Mortimer – Lots of good points, and I hate the fact that hate is such a default in the USA, look at the Canada –vs- USA gun number in bowling for columbine…..the violent crime per 1000 guns in the USA is like thousands of times more than Canada……what’s up with that? We need to legalize Valium or something here in the USA…..folks are up tight for sure…..and the midair between the full scale and the 40% 3-d model was 3 folks at fault….per FAA and AMA safety code…the 3d pilot should have had a spotter……he would have seen the full scale coming and been able to “See and avoid”…..the full scale guy was also at fault, should have never made a low pass, high speed, smoke on, with folks around the runway like that (WHAT was he thinking) and finally the air boss (controller of the event) was an idiot! What was he thinking allowing full scale and model operations at the same time…..events like this and the Brooklyn bridge bring the attention to our activities in a way we do NOT need…..like I said earlier, anything in the wrong hands can cause harm……and just for the record we would LOVE to stop whining about our rights in the USA, but that has not been the recent pattern (maybe since the patriot act, I don’t know) but it seems here if we do not stand up and fight for our freedoms we have, our government is willing to take them away at a record pace…..I have been keeping my eye on land in Canada and Australia! :-)

Duane Brocious – Finally back to Duane, great idea about the RCAPA….and we would LOVE you guys to join the AMA…..the more the merrier…..and I think the merger of the groups IS inevitable…..let’s face it, you guys picked up a Futaba or JR or Spektrum radio and have used it and our guys have duct taped your FPV stuff to our models, we are really ONE TEAM. And I think the UAV regulations, again, should be aimed at Commercial and Civil uses, NOT recreational or educational use….which MAY be defined as line of sight, AMA field or designated locations, so far from an airport, not over populated areas, etc, etc……but I think if we can agree on things like that we are likely to get through the NPRM in the USA with the least collateral damage to our respective hobby or educational efforts…..and both be able to continue to enjoy our activites and advance our respective efforts.....

I am in awe at some of the advancements made here by this group, as I thnk you guys would be if you really see first hand or flwe a larger 30% or 40% arcobatic plane or Jet.....what has happened to aero-medeling in the last 10 years is amazing!

  • I think regulation is coming, but after watching the Sport Light Aircraft regulations come about as a result of advances in light weight GA/Ultra Light designs and numbers, I suspect that the regulation we may face will be measured and realistic. The FAA is not only there to keep the airspace safe, but to encourage commerce. I don't think killing off the development of an entire marketplace is in the wings. It will, however, also be more endorsing of commercial operations than recreational. It is historically so. But still, I doubt that there is a lot of reason for worry, especially if there is a lobby or a group of lobbies vying for their share of the skies. We ultralight folks were spooked by the threat of regulation where it was unrestricted previously --to a degree. There is already regulation in place about what you can do near airports and over certain heights. My personal feeling is that unmanned aircraft don't belong at airports where manned aircraft fly. I have no problem with designated flying fields and prohibitions of near airport use, and limitations to use in populated areas. The reality of the new SLSA rules wasn't as bad as we all expected. Common sense says that with the development level we've all achieved with our projects that we're going to get regulated. It's important to make sure that our interests are represented so that the FAA has all of the facts so they can make sensible rules. But we all need to think in terms of an alliance that not only includes DIY and AMA, but to encourage commercial use people into the fold as well. Regulation will always step on someone's toes, but it's an inevitability. We should all meet it together.

    Just a thought.

    Hot potato!
  • What the hack is AMA ?
and Why do we care them ?
  • Well all that I can say is that I saw many threads and post on this forum where the AMA IN SOME CASES..not all! , was the focus of attack... and now the RCU members are doing the same with us.. so ignore them.. they can debate about the situation as some members did here, but they cant do anything!! neither us! The same right that they have to fly, we also have it and they can not do anything with that! They seem to be enjoying the videos!
    We too!!

Funny every time I take my sUAS down to the local AMA field all I get is interest and positive remarks (okay I have had a few disgruntled comments mostly due to toy envy). As far as being one cold solder joint away from disaster well at least I have not destroyed three planes while taxing like I saw one guy do a while back...

  • Thanks Gary,

RCAPA is free and easy to join as well.

  • More drivel from RCU/AMA:

"OMG, I had no clue this existed, they are 15,000 strong!!!
And they are going to join AMA to fight us from the inside.
No wonder FAA is involved, this is unreal.
They need to regulate them and leave us alone "

What really gets me is this has been spoken and spoken about since 2006 and everyone is shocked that changes are in the offing now! Complete distain for RCAPA from vocal groups a couple of years ago allowed this to happen. Reaping what was sowed comes to mind. If the American community here does not want to form a community based organisation then joining RCAPA and AUVSI must be the thing to do if you want someone other than the AMA to fight your corner.

EDIT Blimey I just read that thread, is hate the default setting in the USA?? By the reasoned argument that happens here occasionally I think not. I should think some of the letters some of those folks will be writing will negate any number of positive RC pushes.

Did some of those people not see the infamous air to air between a large model and full sized aircraft last year at a sanctioned event??

They will all happily embrace modern radios with two way telemetry and improved failsafes, not realising that such innovation comes out of shed inventors, much in the same way as Ham radio sometimes pops up stunning new radio invention (and other stuff) 2.4 Spektrum radios were invented by a British chap, not quite in a shed. But that was his background.

DIYD is a community of people that will bring safer model aircraft flying to the back woods masses.

The UK has sUAS operating commercially as does Australia and several European countries. There has been no impact on traditional modelling.

Stop whining about rights USA aeromodellers and create workable standards that you drive rather than sitting back and waiting for someone else to do it.

  • P.S.

I suggest anyone looking for a parallel situation investigate the FAA regs for model rocketry.

Even the guys with megabuck rockets still can play.
