ArduStation Mega v1.0b arrived


Our ArduStation MEGA boards arrived today and I am truly excited to see how they work. Now starts small assembly job for them and then we can start doing testing for those. 

Big thanks for Colin for his original ASM work, it's great to see what great minds can create. 

New boards looks just awesome. Few connectors are missing but those are quickly soldered. These boards are from the first batch and we have them now small qty in stock. If there are any changes that needs to be made, we will do it and then first production batch will come.

Technical specs:

  • MCU: Atmel 2560 with Atmel 8u2 USB "adapter"
  • XBee footprint for telemetry with external pins
  • IO: Buzzer, Analog, I2C, GPS
  • SDCard holder for storage needs
  • 128 x 64 pixel Graphics LCD
  • 3 x TTL Serial output pins
  • 2 x Servo outputs with internal/external power feed
  • Encoder port for menus etc use
  • Connection for I2C Keyboard 
  • 4 x LEDs for showing different statues

    For I2C yes you need to have level converter as I2C port coming out it 5V on ArduStation Mega board.

    Is the I2C port at 5v or 3.3v? I'm interested in hookup up some 3.3v I2C devices to a ASM V1.5 and wanted to know if I would need a level convert like a PCA9306 or TCA9406 to do so.

    I can see the remote telemetry from my APM, but it has the ArduRover2 code loaded. I wish, like you, that Colin would provide a clean version of the ASM ino. code so that there would not be any issues compiling our own code.

    You might check on Jani's website, but I believe that he has not yet published a schematic of his version of the ASM1.5. I believe that Colin has a schematic of his version on his Git website.

  • TC, top tip thanks, like John I've been struggling to get the code to compile using the sketch compiler. I'm still having trouble seeing any remote telemetry from the apm (quadcopter with the latest version of code loaded) and was hoping updating the asm would fix this.

    Uploaded like a charm using Colins proven binary, uploaded through MP.  I never considered that option (only the Arduino compiler), but it worked great, and was so easy I was actually scared, MP practically did it all by itself before I knew it - LOL

    Also great advice on waiting for an updated .ino file before doing anything with the code, I didn't realize I'm a little early to the ASM party, but its looking fantastic!

    Some day I'd like to play with Rover too, perhaps in a boat ;<)

    I have both the ASM and the older ArduStation sold by 3DR. I have upgraded the firmware on the ArduStation to be able to use Mavlink and it works well. As far as the ASM goes, I used the MP to load the ASM with Colin's latest hex code and it works well except that I want to use the ASM with a rover and not an aircraft.

    I have gone over Colin's programming/modifying instructions for his ASM code and they seem a little iffy so I have have stuck with his latest hex code for now. Once Colin gets a clean ASM ino. file built, I will try modifying the parameter display pages to work with my rover, but not until then. 

    You might try loading your ASM with Colin's latest hex code using the MP as the MP does not care if the ASM is not an aircraft. Just use the MP's custom code upload function on the Firmware tab.



  • Bricked my ASM 1.5 !

    Received Ardustation Mega 1.5 a week ago, looks great, can;t wait to fix it.

    Connected a jDrones uBlox NEO6 Multicopter GPS, booted up, menus worked, but no satellites found. Red light on the GPS on, blue light blinking.

    OK, figured I'd update to the latest firmware so I can have some baseline code to interrogate for baud rate, etc.

    So I compiled and loaded 2.0.18 from

    Compiled with the libraries in the zip file, no compile errors, no upload errors.

    Now the LCD backlight comes on, but the entire character area is a large filled gray square, unit does not boot up.

    Tried it compiled as hardware Mega2560/ADK and also as UNO.

    Have not yet connected a telemetry module, was taking it one step at a time - LOL

    Sent in a tech support ticket on the 8th to Jdrones, no love back yet ;<(

    My questions:
    1. Any thoughts what I may have done wrong or how to un-brick the unit?

    2. Any "tricks" to the compile I may not have guessed correctly? 

    3. Is there a hidden folder of documenation on ASM? I found a schematic, thats about all. Their site lists Source Code, Schematic, Assembly instructions, Telemetry protocol, etc for Ardustation (the kit) but nothing for ASM. Kind of wishing I bought the old one now - LOL

    3. Is there a DXF available, want to make a case/op panel, DXF would be handy to get the spacings right (I'm not lazy, just figure why re-invent/guess the dimensions).
