ArduStation Mega v1.0b arrived

jDrones_ArduStation_Mega_v1.0b_0147_sml.JPG?width=500

Our ArduStation MEGA boards arrived today and I am truly excited to see how they work. Now starts small assembly job for them and then we can start doing testing for those.

Big thanks for Colin for his original ASM work, it's great to see what great minds can create.

New boards looks just awesome. Few connectors are missing but those are quickly soldered. These boards are from the first batch and we have them now small qty in stock. If there are any changes that needs to be made, we will do it and then first production batch will come.

Technical specs:

  • MCU: Atmel 2560 with Atmel 8u2 USB "adapter"
  • XBee footprint for telemetry with external pins
  • IO: Buzzer, Analog, I2C, GPS
  • SDCard holder for storage needs
  • 128 x 64 pixel Graphics LCD
  • 3 x TTL Serial output pins
  • 2 x Servo outputs with internal/external power feed
  • Encoder port for menus etc use
  • Connection for I2C Keyboard
  • 4 x LEDs for showing different statues

  • Thanks for the info Saiful. That's the only commercial antenna tracker that I've seen to date. After paying shipping to the UK along with import duty and tax plus our local delivery man's charge for dealing with customs (another $20 worth) it starts to look like an expensive bit of plywood!

I'll have a look to see if anyone else has open sourced one, otherwise I'll probably design my own :)

  • Hi Tom,

Hmm, weird.. I'm also running 2.43 for my testing. If it says "No Connection" on the front page, that means it hasn't received a heartbeat, which it should do without having to request any data. Have you unplugged your radio from the ASM and reconnected it since you last tried it? Could it potentially be plugged in differently?

If you open a console in arduino whilst connected to the ASM (at 57600 baud rate) you can get some debugging information. It will print info when you first make a connection. If you press the middle button on the keypad on the main screen any received data via the radio is forwarded to the terminal. You could use that to detect if any data is being received.

Also, on another note, I have a feeling that version 0.4 is set up for the mediatek, but you have a ublox. It's just a line of code that needs changing, but soon I'll have a menu for selecting your GPS type.

    @Colin,

I have run into a communication problem with all versions of the ASM code when trying to communicate with the ArduRover2 v2.43 navigation code. Even when the telemetry radios are communicating correctly, the ASM screen continually displays "No Communication".

I originally had ASM v0.2b installed on my ASM and it communicated fine with earlier versions of the ArduRover2 firmware (2.41) However, now that the ArduRover code has been updated to v2.43, I have not been able to communicate with my ArudRover2 APM using ASM versions 0.2b, 0.3, and 0.4.

The two telemetry radios are communicating as both green leds are solid and the red leds flash indicating data transfer is going on. I have checked the ground radio with the MP and the telemetry works fine.

Since this communication issue occurs with all versions of the ASM code, it must be a systemic issue in relation to the latest ArduRover2 navigation firmware. I suspect that the ASM is not correctly requesting the start of the telemetry transmission in relation to the latest ArduRover2 navigation firmware.

  • Thanks for the update the ASM, I will test it soon. Right now Im using the Antenna Pan/Tilt for EagleEyes Antenna Tracker with Hitec HS-485HB servo. For Pan it use gear to rotate

    @Colin,

Thanks for updating the ASM code, especially for the rover. Now that I have all of my rovers in shape, I can return to the ASM and update the code and put it to good use.

  • Hi all,

    I've published a new version: ArdustationMega_v0.4.hex

The antenna tracking code looks like it should work in bearing. I haven't got a 360 deg servo setup to verify and haven't made a page for end point adjustment. I have ordered some parts to make a 360 setup using the guide published on flitetest. It will probably take several weeks for the bits to arrive (from HK) and me construct it, but I will verify that the code works once it's made.

I've added a lot of parameters for planes, which should cover the main ones required for setting a plane up (there are 294 to choose from when I last checked!).

I've also added a handful more for rovers, by looking at the wiki for important ones. I'd like to add another page for rover sonar setup and perhaps any other important ones that crop up. There are also over 200 parameters to choose from with rovers now.

I'll be coming back to copters...

I've also made parameter downloading much more reliable than it has been in the past. Check the output in the console for progress. Later this will be an on-screen progress bar.

  • yea this was a main function and haven't seen any updates on the antenna tracking feature

  • any updates for antenna tracking?

    Hi All,

Finally got a picture of my ArduStation Mega installed in a Preserver 3000 crush proof case.

I had the ASM on for about five minutes indoors and had picked up 7 - 8 sats and a 3D fix. Not shown in the picture is an antenna that is normally connected to a 3DR 915MHz telemetry radio that i mounted in the right side of the case.
