I am sure that there are some members who like to take a ready made multicopter of known performance and modify it to meet their autonomous vehicle performance requirements.
I have personally worked with some people who have taken the NAZA out of their DJI Phantom and replaced it with an Ardupilot APM. They were very familiar with the performance of the Phantom, but wanted a quantum leap in stabilization and navigation performance.
