Josh, yes, I'm aware but there are a few problems:
2.4GHz is the RC Control frequency, and 900 MHz is the telemetry frequency. So that leaves 1.2, and 400MHz for video. 1.2 is an option, but equipment selection in this range is limited. And there was another issue with it, though I can't remember what it was.
Dr. Pete, yeah, pretty complicated to do that, but probably the best way. Maybe the tethered quad would be a perfect solution for that. Still complicated...
@Jason: Thank you very much! These videos give a very good overview on wich end of the videoline the money is best invested. You can crank up both ends as well if powerconsumption/space/weight is no issue besides the legal factors...

Its all a little like adding huge engines to foam aircraft that can't take it for other reasons. Look for peanut scale aircraft and the blokes that fly them. They create feather weight things that fly in amazing ways. Clever folks do the same thing with radios. This sort of power would be illegal airborne pretty much anywhere.
I prefer to get input from people who know more than me before setting off on a hopeless crusade. ;) Is it a crazy idea, or is it worth trying?
It would be very easy for me to do the mechanics. I'm just wondering, signal wise, is it worth the effort?
My biggest problem right now, is that since I have often flying in forested areas, it's almost impossible to get the Rx up above the treeline, and so the UAV goes behind trees very easily.
I know it is very tempting to go for the big watts, but from experience using >1W transmitters in a FPV setup can easily lead to misery and require a lot of experimentation to get working properly. Without enough separation and all that energy pumping out of the transmitter, you get into all sorts of trouble with reduced R/C range, bad GPS reception and even stuff like servos being affected with sporadic jitter.
That hobby gets crazier day by day. Crashing >5KG Copters into the crowd seems not enough. Why not implement a 1KW 2,4GHZ microwave oven as Video TX, that will also grill the surrounding.
I wonder if those 2W TX are getting biological relevant for the operator during arming.
Choose the right frequency and build a decent groundstation with diversity (including a tracked high gain antenna) that will give you the most range fun.
Morli, you mention directional Tx antenna, and that's something I've thought about. If would be fairly easy to implement a gimbal to "look at home" on my big helicopter. I have wondered how much improvement I would get if I did that?
I use 5.8GHz, and a patch is fairly large. But a CP Helical is not very big. Could I use that as a directional Tx? I have one, but it's intended to be used as a directional Rx on a tracker.
Channel 4 on this transmitter, 5645 MHz is out-of-band for radio amateurs in the USA.
