Coming soon: MinimOSD!

Hi guys! I'm giving you a preview of an upcoming product from the DIY Drones store, the MinimOSD, a minimal Arduino-based on-screen display board. It's tailored for use with ArduPilot Mega and the MAVlink protocol, and designed to be as compact as possible.

It's main components are an ATmega328P 8 bit microcontroller with an Arduino bootloader, and a MAX7456 monochrome on-screen display. Programming is done through an FTDI-compatible 6-pin header.

It features two independent power and ground sections to isolate the OSD's analog stage: a +5V section for the ATmega and the OSD's digital stage, powered through the FTDI cable or other +5V source; and a regulated +5V section for the OSD's analog stage, powered through the video in/out header and capable of handling up to +12V input. Solder jumpers are available to combine the two power and ground sections if desired.

Spec lists are the best, so here's one!

  • ATmega328P with Arduino bootloader
  • MAX7456 monochrome on-screen display
  • FTDI cable compatible pinout
  • Standard 6-pin ISP header
  • Two independent power sections with an LED indicator on each
  • Solder jumpers for combining the power sections
  • +5V 500mA regulator for up to +12V supply input
  • Solder jumper for PAL video option
  • Exposed test points for HSYNC and LOS
  • Dimensions: 0.7"W x 1.7"L (2.4" w/ pins as shown) x 0.3"H

The production version won't be green, and we're not too fond of blue anymore, so expect something different on future products ;)

(And yes, I know I missed a decoupling cap on the board in the photo. Sorry Chris!)

Expected release date is within 2-3 weeks, price is TBD. Watch this space! UPDATE: Price will be $89.99 USD.

  • which OSD do you use ?

The Pixim Ultra WDR 690 TVL is working for me (PAL version).

  • Lets see what happens when  I connect the new and best-ever minimOSD to my camera :)

@KnutL: Yeah. Good to know that you have a compatible camera!

There is no a "standard camera" by itself. When I said non-standard it means out of those analog video standards which defines vertical and horizontal frequencies, number of lines and everything else. So, there are some rules on the composite video signal which is the one used on most FPV links. Of course that some OSD could be more flexible. But, when your'e dealing with something out of a standard... it's not 100% predictable. You can't ensure it will work for sure.

The cheap camera I have mentioned was my HobbyKing one. But it works. It's limited only by it's own limitations. ;)

  • Oops, I am lucky: Thats exactly my cam also :) I have some color trouble indeed: Can you give me a link for the IR filter please.

  • Mine is

"690TVL Ultra WDR Pixim Seawolf Sensor chip osd camera with 2.8mm wide view"

if you have the same one, did you get the replacement IR filter? the colors are horrible outdoors (not natural) and securitycam 2000 shipped out replacement IR filters.

  • Justin, thnx !

Which pixim seawolf do you have ? mine is a pixim seawolf.

  • there isn't an easy answer, unless you can find someone else with your particular cam already using a max7456 OSD, you might be the very first person. It'll probably work. I've got lets see:

    hobbyking crap cam - works

pixim seawolf based cam - works

650TVL Sony Effio-E DSP - does not work with max7456, does work with other OSDs

Super WDR LG XDI-II 650TVL (an LG chipset) - works

so my strike-out rate is 25%.

The rcgroups forum post I linked to above has someone with a 100% strike-out rate buying 600+TVL cameras.

  • 1. What is a standard fpv cam ?

    2. Mine is not really cheap - its a 100$ cam. Excellent quality ! I am really happy with it and no problem with my goggles.

    3. I dont want to bye a 2nd cam just because of the OSD :(

Like Justin said, it's not predictable. There are too many variables on those non standard ones.
I did some tests with a HobbyKing one with no problem. But usually on FPV forums you'll see advises to not buying those cheap China ones. The risk is pick up one with no conformance with standard frequencies and too bad video signal.
One annoying thing on the HobbyKing's camera which I'm also testing is that it has gaps of half second when light conditions changes abruptly. It probably isn't good for FPV.
This one from DIYD Store is smaller, faster and works really really well in low light conditions: http://store.diydrones.com/Super_HAD_CCD_Camera_1_3_Sony_520TV_Line...
