(We removed the Chat Feature until we can integrate it onto the site without causing Page Loading time delays and any user errors! I'm going to work with Ning tomorrow afternoon on trying to fix the chat so that it doesn't affect any of our users. If that doesn't work we can either wait 1-3 Months until Ning 3.0 is available to us or create an IRC)
We are trying to integrate a chat room feature without slowing down the page loading times on DIYDrones.com and we need your feedback and help.
What we need from the community:
- Do you like or dislike the chat feature? (Please explain why)
- Does it slow down your page loading times and alter your overall user experience on DIYDrones?
- Is this something you would like to see be perminent on DIYDrones.com?
- Do you have any suggestions on how to improve it?

@Sentinel, Thats odd because someone else using Firefox 20 on Ubuntu said it worked fine for them this morning. Have you tried disconnecting from the chat and seeing if it affects your performance issues?
@Michael, An IRC is definitely an option but Ning already comes with a chat feature and we are hoping that with the Upgrade to Ning 3.0 the chat feature will be even better.
Out of curiosity, why not IRC?
@Dennis, Thanks for the Great Praises Pal!! Your Con has been the biggest worry of mine also with the chat. So for the last couple hours I have been working on an auto archiving system to copy and paste the chat into a document for me and each night I can create downloadable files or paste them onto a single forum.
What do you think?
@Marooned, Yeah I thought about that fact pretty hard while doing this. My point of view on it is that the forums are pretty cluttered with 10 forums asking the same question so this might clean up some of the clutter. Usually its because a new member to the site couldn't find the discussion thread so they create a new one. Most of what the chat should be used for is just random chatter, conversation, and networking. But for the most part the chat could be a great learning tool for newbies if they just sit there and watch discussions in the chat happening. Just my 2 cents. Also I can look into archiving the chat room if people find that they want to read discussions in the chat that they might of missed.
Joshua, the main problem with the chat is that now instead of asking on the forum and - what's more important - getting answers on the forum, some knowledge will stop being persistent. Chat is not archived, is not divided into threads, is not searchable.. if it will be used for "chatting" then ok. If it will be used for exchanging the knowledge, community could hurt because of that.
Just another point to rethink.
@Georacer, Yeah I have a feeling people new to the website and hobby will find the chat the most useful and also people who are experienced and love helping out newbies.
I don't experience any slowdown.
However, yesterday (or the day before) the chat popped up on pageload, which I didn't like. Today, it stays minimized, which I like.
However, I 've never used such a feature in any forum and I doubt I ever will. I just don't see its use.
Hmm.. if the chat is using ningim.com then blocking JS from that 3rd party site could be a reason.
