Hi everyone,

I would like to share my experience with Sony RX0 which is a fantastic camera for surveying.

SonyRX0 zero is a small size, a shockproof digital camera with 25 mm wide angle (equivalent to 35mm)

It is only 110 gram with battery. Quality, size, wight make it suitable for surveying applications on drones.

Sony RX0 has a manual mode to set all camera parameters manually to get sharp pictures 

to get sharp quality pictures you should consider to set few parameters correctly:

Shutter speed: to remove blur from photo shutter speed should be set for higher value. 1200–1600 is recommended. Higher the shutter speed reduce image quality.

ISO: lower the ISO higher image quality. ISO between 150–300 is recommended.

Focus: Recommended to set the focus manually on the ground before the flight. Direct camera to an object which is far, and slightly increase the focus, you will see on camera screen that image sharpness changes by changing the value. Set the image sharpness at highest.

White balance: recommended to set to auto.

  • The only Multiport USB I have is one that I purchased from flytron, which is not working unfortunately. It has 5v of electricity on AUX5. So I'm not entirely sure why It's not triggering. Based on their wire, do you suggest I cut the Sony multiport wire and solder directly onto the servo wires. If so I would need to know what colour attaches where. 

  • Yes it's a multiport on pdf !

    First what you need to know is you have to test it without flight controller.

    Do you have a link to your cable ? If it's 5 pin it will not work. Sony triggering will work only on multiport : focus + triggerring need to be shorten with ground and these focus + trigger pad are on multiport not classic 5 pin

    The microUSB wires are as follows... Red (VCC), White (D+), Green (D-), Black (GND). Since this is not a traditional trigger wire as displayed in the pdf, how do you recommend I wire these to a servo wire? Also, do you know if the micro USB in the pdf is a multi port, because Sony has a special 10 pin header.

    I noticed the micro USB only has 3 wires. I just stripped a spare one and it has 5 wires (red, blk, gre, wht, and copper). Curious if you familiar with this 5 pin micro USB and what wires need to be soldered to the servo wire. Hoping to trouble shoot this tonight. If I have to buy the camera trigger micro USB outlined in the docs then I'm probably better off ordering a Seagull Map2 trigger. Look forward to hearing from you sooon.

    I'm trying to trigger the RXO, but have had no such luck. I purchased a Sony multi servo wire from flytron. I've tried every trigger mode available on QGroundControl (GPIO, SeaGull Map2, Generic PWM) using AUX 56. nothing seems to work. Do I need to set the trigger signal frequency to something specific. I also own a Sony a6000 and I haven't been able to trigger it either. I know I'm missing a critical step here, but I can't seem to figure it out. Your support would be greatly appreciate.   • I don't see any reason to geotag photos if you don't have a very precise feedback from camera (<5ms). If you manage to solve this problem I think there will be a lot of clients ready to spend more than 1k USD for the mod but I also realize this is not an easy job, others tried with QX1 and had almost no result. Sensefly is doing this but with much more friendly cameras. RAW is much better than any JPG, tested.

  • Pascal P.Pascal if you are really interested in very high precision mapping  we can implement 
    multi-pass surveying algorithm as well.
    Example Scenario. 
    Let's say you want to get 0.8cm/px resolution and you have to trigger in 0.7sec intervals
    with multi-pass scan dronee plane will pass 3 times the same path
    to trigger in the midpoints (each time +0.7sec intervals) that it skipped in the previous passes.
    Thus, if the plane has the maximum flight time of 60min with the full battery, you will cover the area of 20min flight time.
    Even with this, you probably will be able to cover  more area than you do with the multirotor by benefiting

  • we do capture the feedback from rx0 for geotagging, but since we use off the shelf wifi API which can have latency 1-30ms triggering, we currently do not support RTK-GPS with this version, meanwhile, we soon will have RTK/PPK version for precision mapping 
    You can use RAW mode with Dronee Plane, and geotag as well. It is quite fast when triggering from the trigger button, meanwhile, I tested the triggering thorough its wifi API, it was strangely slower than the JPEG version.C currently we do recommend the JPEG version. With seagull problem is you do not get feedback from the camera, if camera skips one photo triggering you will have problems in geotagging
    Matthew we usually do tests >70% overlap percentages, RX0 indeed supports 0.5fps with high-quality sd-cards
