  • Hi Morli,

actually the history of the record of TAM seems to be more complicated and not yet finished.
First, the record was set in the F3 (model airplane with piston engine) category. Then it was moved to a newly found category F8, which has been removed in 2008.
It was supposed to be put in the U-2 category <5kg but I can not find it there yet.

Now we have the situation that there are a lot of world records not yet set in the UAV categorys.
They could be easily filled by model airplanes equipped with an autopilot. Or by "professional" UAV´s.
It will be interesting to see if a race begins now :-)
The only distinction between model and UAV seems to be that the flying system has to be designed for research or another use. Very weak definition in my opinion, there are large overlaps...(May I cite FAI here, copyright?)
    See: http://www.fai.org/system/files/sc12_2001.pdf
Actually TAM does not fit there 100%...
Reminds me of some laws in different countries that try to make the same separation...

Hi MarcS, the parent/root site gives you more info available here, they have lot of info in rules governing each category , I haven't gone through all of it but i think you question is answered there. Old Tam record seems to have been dissolved or migrated to some other ( UAV) from original RC category I guess. I could be mixed up in the details but site could set you right. The record shows as being canceled or superseeded but my understanding is that the particular record was removed from model aircraft cat and considered in UAV cat according to TAM project site info
  • Hi, thanks for the interesting link.
Sadly there are only few records listed. Are they in the process of adding the old TAM records found here?

I think the achievement of the TAM-Group is amazing, regardless of it being recognized by an oficial record!

One other question remains for me. How will they decide what is a model airplane and what belongs in the category "U-1, Remotely controlled UAV"
