Gary Mortimer's new (?) company

It's Gary Mortimer day at DIY Drones! I just noticed that he's got a spiffy new(?) website for his aerial imaging company, and it looks like he's going to be a UK and South Africa rep for AttoPilot. Check it out here. Gary, can you tell us more about the company and your plans?

  • Pretty close match between the Spectra AP and the Boomerang. Gary, thanks for posting close up's, case closed on that one!

No the guardsheep photo is our take on the flying wing Patrick, it does look like one from Mike or Gene and not that unlike a zagi, the aerofoil is different though and shaping of the centre section keeps changing in different iterations, think we have it right now.

Quite by chance we called it Manta just like Chris did with his, to create a difference its now Manta EPP, it will be a low cost entry level device. As its EPP it will be able to bounce off things unlike other conventional based glider products that crunch. Rob and I were thinking about a £1500 price point to include everything, radio, aircraft Attopilot 1.8 GCS. The only thing we would'nt add would be camera as there are as many different choices in that regard as people that might purchase. Just the EPP airframe with motor/ESC will sell for less than £100. Expect it to appear on the flying wings website soon as well as YellowPlane.

Here it is along with a second one which sits unbuilt here, before I stuffed it in my case. Oh I need to say the complete system weighs less than 7KG quite important if you are planning to operate in the UK.

  • My apologies and no wonder I could never find their website. I was always under the assumption it was RPV not RPF.

    My mistake.
  • Casual reader, not really. Only when I have the time to hunt around. I do not have time to check on everybody's website that builds UAV's, I am busy with engineering. What can you tell from the picture of the Manta shadow?
Here are some screen shots with the top hatch off with the shortest of the three wing sets.

    Other differences.
40+hrs of CFD on optimization of the design for maximum efficiency.
    Full lifting body
    Size
    100% composite construction. (Molded)
Designed to be modular with different wing sections dependent of mission profile.
Airfoils are very different and wing plan form is different.
    Detachable wings for easy transportation.
Molded pockets at the wing tips for maximum separation between components to eliminate interference.

The list can keep going. I will put everything on a brochure to keep this type of situation from arising again.

    Cheers,

    CM

  • "that's the first time I have been to his website and you are right they do look very close from a distance." That would imply what to the casual reader? I could tell from a picture of the Manta shadow, I PM'ed Gary about that picture and asked if it was one of Genes birds. CM why don't you post some close up photo's so we can see the coincidences/differences and put this deal to bed?
  • No problem Chris. Sorry about that. I felt I was being accused of something I did not do. Sorry Gary, back to the thread.

Ahem. Me with moderator hat on saying please play nice. Patrick, that might have been a better one for a PM.
  • "Go tell that to Boeing and Northrop!" HA HA. Look at their birds. BWB and B2. The damn B2 design has been around for 60+ years....... BWB is just a fat one with wing extensions.
  • Patrick,

No not kidding you and yes I have seen the Spectra many times. This bird came from a customer request to house the BTC 88 camera. Never at any time did the Spectra every come to mind. This bird was designed from conception to be 100% lifting body unlike the Spectra and it also was designed to have 3 types of wing sets to allow flexibility. I can keep going but as I said this has been talked over.
