  • The Swift Engineering Bat employs net recovery, works quite well.

  • I believe there is nothing cheaper

the net you get at e-Bay for 40 euros

the two poles at KAMKOP for 42 euros

    simple and effective

  • The net is an ancient idea with possibilities for cramped spaces.  Could have a pair of ropes slung over pulleys at each end that pay out as the net slows the aircraft. The ropes have weights on them at intervals that get picked up sequentially, thus causing a smooth controlled stop. The weights, of different sizes, can be added or removed and spaced as needed to provide the proper braking for different weight/ground-speed aircraft. Cost is next to nothing. Might work with a bedsheet, avoiding the cost/hassle of a net, if there's not much wind.

This net arrest landing looks pretty effective.    Another approach that has proven effective is the skyhook bungy developed by Insitu.

Here is a link to a takeoff and skyhook landing video of the Insitu RQ-21.   The landing uses the skyhook bungy approach.   The skyhook bungy approach is much more dynamic that the net landing shown above.

  • i suggest you recline the net by 45 degree. would make the arrest better. this is called 'net arrest'

Oh man that is brutal! You would not want to land any AP fixed wing uav like this. Certainly not with 30k€ multispectral caméras lol

  • It is also one of the techniques that EMT uses for their LUNA drones to land safely.

The LUNA drone is widely used by the german armed forces.

However i think a huge net is a quite laborious setup if you also can land safely on the belly in the grass...
