The announcement was made in Montreal where they debuted a zero-emissions electric deomonstration car powered by the aluminum-air battery at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

MONTREAL— Alcoa Ltd. and Israeli firm Phinergy are working together to commercialize an aluminum-air battery they claim can extend the range of an electric vehicle by about 1,600 kilometres.

According to Phinergy, the aluminum-air battery technology can also be applied to stationary applications like generators, and defence applications like mobile housing and unmanned vehicles.

  • This is not completely accurate. While theiy takes energy to form aluminum, this energy is mostly very clean and renewable energy, such as waterfalls (e.g. Canada, sweden) or geothermic (e.g. Iceland). This is "energy for free", that is not harnested otherwise.
  • the problem with aluminum-air batteries is that there is no way to recharge them unless you replace the physicaly replace the aluminum. and the amount of energy needed to refine the aluminum again after use is insane making thi a less then green idea.
