I googled around DIYD trying to find a post on the Mini Talon but couldn't find anything. Not long after the X-UAV Talon the Mini Talon made its debut! So far I've had this backpacked sized drone up for about 30 minutes in a auto mission. Packed with a 4s4000 pack, 8x4.5 prop and a 2216-1250kv Sunny Sky motor it sips about 3 amps.
After putting my Mini Talon together I ran an autotune. Thanks to the devs for this awesome feature. Makes tuning a whole lot easier. The only thing I had to do was adjust a few things like L1, and touch up on the gains a little bit.
Once I have my airspeed sensor in I'll adjust TECS and start having some fun!
As part of giving back to the community I've attached my parameter file.
- This is for a 1400g Talon Mini, YMMV depending on weight
- I have about 80/20 Dual Rate / Expo on a switch for manual flying.
- ArduPlane 3.0.x now introduces AutoTune. I'd HIGHLY suggest using that to tune and then compare to the attached parameters.
- My Aileron linkages are inside hole (Servo), middle hole (control horn)
- My Elevator linkages are outside hole (Servo), middle hole (control horn)
- Check your mode switches and calibrate your radio if you use these parameters.
- I'm not responsible if the parameters provided crashes your plane

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I want to ask if the wings can be detached from the body of the plane, for easier transport? I am looking for a fixed wing UAV platform that can be carried around when traveling.

Here are my Pids for the mini talon Arduplane 3.0.1 autotune , the plane is very stable .
I do my own 3d printing with my Makerbot...
Autotune is safe to use as long as you've already setup Manual and Stabilize. Stabilize should level the plane IF you've already leveled the plane on the ground and then hit the 'level plane' button in mission planner. There's some funky stuff that Autotune CAN do. It's the whole garbage in, garbage out thing. I've had it just about flip my plane over. In those circumstances you'll want to have the ability to fall back to stabilize or manual very quickly.
A little off the topic here but I see you used autotune to tune your mini talon, how safe is that? Also when I flew my maiden with the mini talon, started in manual and it seemed a bit nose heavy so I switched to stabilize and the wings leveled but it took a nose dive. Is the stabilized mode supposed to level the nose regardless of the CG? Or was my initial setup in mission planner incorrect eg. did not set the correct altitude? How does the throtttle affect the flight? I know in some pusher configurations adding throttle actualy pushes the nose down. BTW do you do your own 3d printing.

I wouldn't say that 1600 is to much. Just probably takes a hefty toss. I crashed one due to an APM issue. My new Mini-T has landing gear on it so I can RoG. It's a blast.

Hi Scott, I recently bought myself a mini Talon and before that I had a FPV Raptor and I am absolutely loving the mini Talon. My Mini Talon weighs 1600grams with a 850KV motor and a 9x4.5 prop. I unfortunately do not know what make the motor is (there is no make on the motor). Would you say it weighs to much for that motor and prop because I have difficulty hand launching it in no wind or am I not throwing it correctly?
