It is my UGV that has done only by myself.Front Camera for Road recognizing, LMS291 is for detect obstacle, IMU300 and DGPS are for navigation and attitude estimating. Solar cell is for RF system backup power.After Paint....XDI have not completed yet. Just provide way point navigation, obstacle avoidance (only front). I have stored money to buy Laser Range finder and manufacture a real gun turret with vision target tracking.
Ya! I have noticed the UGV of PRC, They have so much budget on UGV project and enough members on it.

LIDAR is LMS291 at first picture. it provide 180 deg in front of UGV. Many university in US and US ARMY use the same equipment, but type batter than me.
Which laser range finder were you looking at?
Also, does it store the terrain data like obstacles etc for later use? My UGV currently uses scanning IR sensors in similar fashion to LIDAR to map out clearance in front of it, but turns within its own footprint so it cannot back into obstackes when avoiding others.
