Potentially The Ultimate Compact GCS

I just ran across this this morning on  Engadget, Wired online. It immediately struck me as almost a "holy grail" of tablets to use for a ground control station.  It has plenty of buttons, and 2 joysticks.  We already have the excellent Andropilot app.  Now we have built in controls...  Maybe we should pool some money to send one of these to Kevin Hester.

The only problem is the specs are a little lightweight:

- 7" 1024x600 display, no mention of brightness

- Android 4.1 Jellybean

- Arm Coretex A9 dual-core 1.6 GHz

- 8GB Flash, 1GB Ram, with a microSD card slot

The really good news is it's only $170. It's definitely worth experimenting with.

I'd kick in $20 to send one to Kevin Hester if he's interested in developing it for AndroPilot use.  Anybody else?

Arthur - that's awesome!  Do you mind if I merge that class into Andropilot?

Thanks Noth - I look forward to your next report.

  • Dave, does the Vita run on Android?

I implemented RC control via telemetry on Droidplanner, take a look on this post for more info. Currently t only uses the screen as interface, because I tried to implement a USB Joystick. But none of my crappy joystick where recognized by my tablet.

  • EDIT - other than a walkman...

    i won't go on....

  • Got here late as usual...

Just another thought. Sony have opened up the playstation vita for 'open development', I've not had time to read about it yet, but will do.

My lad has one, and i have to say - it's perfect! The sticks are super sensitive (tiny throw but very accurate - you feel like you are using the force) - it's got a swipe pad on the back (think camera controls) , plenty of buttons and a screen thats begging for 50% video and 50% HUD.

Oh and all the usual gubbins; gps, mag, 2 onboards cameras - for pilot face footage etc... and a beautiful screen

Kevin, I could even try to pry it out of his hands (I'll let him use my phone for a bit) and to send you if you fancy taking up the challenge!

I've just picked it up again - perfect i tell you!

And that's the first time I've recommended a Sony over 'something else'.

  • Odd about the usb OTG, as according to Archos it does not support it. It's not mentioned anywhere in any specs or docs I saw for it. I work for a partner of archos, that's why I could just go an pull a unit to play around with.

The odd thing is, I have one OTG cable which does physically not fit unto the socket, from a previous archos unit I used to have. I'll check when I'm at work tomorrow, we should have boxloads of OTG cables around so I should be able to test this. Generally archos are quite precise with the specs but it could well be they didn't have it in the first OS build or something like this and have since added it.

  • Kevin, sorry no, I don't know of any sources.  I assumed it would be available at that price. Maybe it just needs a bit of time to hit stores here?  Or take up Olivier's offer?

  • Hi Kevin,

    Try this link, http://www.amazon.fr/Archos-Gamepad-Tablette-tactile-Processeur/dp/...

Amazon France has it at less than 140 €, don't know about sending it to the US, but I can help with it if you want...
