Presenting ArduCopter project at Science Day

Last Thursday, February 9 was dedicated to the Day of Science in Russia. I was invited on meetup to present ArduCopter project. There were journalists from television, some of them were really interested in quadcopter, therefore, they made a small report. Unfortunately, I had to speak in Russian, but, I hope, you'll catch the idea from the video. You can find more videos and photos from this event below.

Here is a short demo in the hall:

This is how my booth looked like:

  • Thanks, Emile! This is standard GoPro camera mount for ArduCopter from jDrones (Jani). No any special servos.

Thank you for your explanations, Mark! A few months ago I made a blog post about how I had updated my digital camera for aerial photography. Maybe, it could be useful for you. As for TG-9X, I also think that this must be a firmware bug..

  • Developer

Using TG-9X with factory v2 firmware.

I have programmed Camera_Control mode on 3 position switch F.MODE (N,1,2)   I use a servo for CAM_TRIG  N= Stability only, 1= Guided Stability  2 = Locked to preset aim values (using Trim for now) but could use last Guided position.

Note: I have not programmed or tested Locked mode yet.

    I reassign channels 5--8

    CH______IN________OUT

    5-------HOV THR____Cam_Roll_servo (I mix AIL in Camera code to drive CAM_MIX if  F.Mode =1)

    6-------HOV PIT_____Cam_Tilt_servo (I mix ELV in Camera code to drive CAM_MIX if  F.Mode =1)

7-------GEAR_______OSD_MODE (Clears screen when above 2000 and servo drives CAM_TRIG below 1000)

8-------PIT TRIM____APM_Mode_control (Warning! This requires APM Code and PPM to be in sync on CH -8)

    Configuration Notes:

I use lower range 1100-1900 for Cam_Yaw or Shutter_Release this is a 2 position switch from factory, I will replace switch with a pot when all these mods pass testing.

    I disable CAMERA, MOUNT and RC_5_FUNCT_0, and for 6, 7 & 8.

I revised Camera.pde to my specifications for F.MODE switch control,

When I better understand the built in stability and camera controller (that uses Mavlink commands)

I will merge it with my code

I have a wiring harness that connects OSD,Video TX and APM power for this beast.

This is a work in progress, I have e not tested it in every possible way,

There maybe a bug in the TG-9X that prevent mixing AIL output to CH-5 when assigned to HOV THR  I can mix RUDDER to Roll in Camera and it works, RUD guides CAM_ROLL,

I believe it is a bug in factory V2 firmware

  • Congrats!

Wery nice especially when you say @djjwe òsasxkao pskasxò sòx@

    :-)

One question, is that the GOPRO mount from Jakub? Are you using special servos?

    Cheers,

    Emile

  • Yes, camera stabilization works very good. Can't wait to try it outside (it's very frosty now, that's why I fly only indoors).

Thanks Rui! I'm also like this kind of fairs, it's awesome when you show people things, which they see for the first time, they are so curious to learn more about them. Good luck with your perfomance!

Nice setup, Mark! How do you activate shoot function in your camera? With APM's relay? Or servo?

Great demo with lots of students, the camera stability works sweet..

I am building my quad now. With Remzibi OSD and 3 modes of camera control. Locked forward, stabilized to horizon,  and user guided with stabilize. For head tracker FPV use. I need to get some tall landing gear to finish it.

  • Nice one :D 2 more months and it will be my turn to present arducopter / ardupilot and multipilot32 at the Science Fair in my school, and was invited already for a speak to IT students of 2 schools to show them the programming possibilities. I like this type of events, it's a great incentive for kids and teenagers to get envolved ! Great show Kirill.

  • Again, I'm amazed at how well the camera stabilization is working!

  • Thanks, Dany! Mostly I've spoken about what is actually a quadcopter, what it includes, why do we need copters and so on...

It was running on 2.1, a little obsolete, I know, but I felt myself more comfortable with it, because made dozens of flights on it.

    Nice!

this is great demonstration of the technology!  you even have camera stabilization in full effect.

Could not get any of what you said but I am sure it's good!

Were you running 2.3 or was that more lie 2.2.49? I remember you have great stability with 2.2.49 back then.

    Just wondering!

    Dany
