I just recently got done watching "Prototype This!", they finished making a UAV that drops a life preserver within swimming distance of the victim! The victim wore a device that transmitted its location to a base station. This could be used as a valuable tracking device for police work because the UAV creates its own way points in order to follow and observe a suspect. The top programmers name is Joe Grand, his website is Grand Idea Studio (for those who are interested). If this is a double post I will remove it! (i seem to be beat to the punch when it comes to this stuff!)
@Jack
I wanna go self employed but $$$ is goin down the crapper. Thanks for the info on Joe's businesses I used emachineshop, Eagle PCB, and his GPS module. Also, their show should get some investors for the live guard device! That was the most awesome prototype ever and it would be MEGA useful for isolated beaches. I would buy the modules for sure (provided I didn't live out in the middle of nowhere)
There was a bunch of gizmodo overflow on this a while ago. Some government was considering deploying it. It was hard to take it seriously considering lifeguard budgets. More interesting is how Joe got paid to do it. The self employed empire is definitely a fixture of the 21st century.
20 years ago you had to hire the GE corporation or the Whipsaw company to build a product. Today you hire Joe & his Eagle PCB, gcc, emachineshop army.
