I like the radical simplicity approach... check out the high-level outline here:

I'll check out the ArduPirates installer, and give a try at simplifying the installation instructions.

But, it is pretty painful to set up Arduino with libraries, etc... notice that once everything is set up (and the right Processor selected!!) building ArduPilot Mega and ArduCopter are the simplest items on the list!

Hopefully the Arduino people will make this easier in future versions.

After more inspection, I worry that this is approach is too complicated. It's WAY more complex than the manual itself, perhaps because you're installing on a Mac, which is not what most people use.

I'd suggest rethinking this approach. Remember that the point is radical simplicity. If it isn't simpler than the manual, I worry that we're not making progress.

If we need to change the way the software is distributed, so be it. But as a non Mac user, it's just painful reading through your struggles with Arduino installation. Can you try the ArduPirates installer instead and see if that's easier for you?

Nice start, Mark! The key thing will be to add lots of pictures and videos. Doug Weibel is doing a series of how-to videos that will fit in with this well.
