Hey guys i have been keeping an eye on the thermal imaging market trends.  Recently FLIR launched their new thermal imaging camera for the iphone 5!!  Thermal cameras traditionally sell for thousands of dollars for even an entry level unit but with the introduction of the FLIR ONE thermal camera these prices are being challenged.  The FLIR ONE is designed for the iphone 5 and retails for $350.  Well now FLIR has some competition!!  Seek thermal has just launched (9/25/2014) there thermal imaging camera for android and iphone which will retail for $200.  Some specs  of each below.....

FLIR ONE:  http://www.flir.com/flirone/

  • Fits iphone 5 and 5s only (it is designed to mount to a supplied i phone cover)
  • Thermal image resolution???? (uses their Lepton thermal camera)
  • Uses FLIR's thermal mixing (basically its the thermal image with a visible light image overlay to better outline the actual image)

Seek Thermal:  http://thermal.com/index.html

  • Available with either a standard iphone connector or with a micro USB connector (see their website for compatibility)
  • Thermal image resolution:  206 x 156 Array (uses the Vanadium Oxide Micro Bolometer)
  • 32136 pixels
  • No thermal mixing as in the FLIR ONE

  • @Bill R  just email them, they responded to my email very quickly!

  • The web site says it is not optimized for iPad.  Does that mean it will have lower resolution?  Can someone explain?

  • Ooo, finally. Good to see that they got off the ground.

Hope they make a mark 2 version, that'll be what I go for. That 150ft quality at 1000 ft would be perfect.

  • thank you John Hestness for replying. cant wait to get one!

  • I got an order confirmation email form Seek.  It says they have high volume and there will be a 5 to 7 day delay in shipping.  Fed Ex ground shipping in the U.S. appears to be included in the price.

  • Thank you Gary
  • Hi Armen,

Near IR (The one made by pulling the IR filter off of off the shelf cameras can be really valuable for multispectral imaging especially for crop and ground water determination.

But Far IR like the SEEK (Thermal) lets you see heat emitting bodies and even tell what temperature they are.

Until now Far IR has been ungodly expensive, but the 2 cameras in this article are very inexpensive and the Seek is very high resolution for this kind of sensor - certainly at the $200.00 price.

Near and far have different uses, but far IR is certainly not outmoded by near IR.

  • So not worth ordering the Seek?
I know thermal isnt new its just a lil more affordable to me.
    thanks
  • Interesting thought Gary,

But it does bring up the possibility of now being able to inexpensively obtain truly multispectral images Visible, Near and Far IR at least and UV should be doable too.

I'm sure for the Ag people that will be really useful, but  probably a whole lot of other uses as well.

We're going to need bigger computers.

armen t Its always a plan to listen to Jack. If China decides 4k thermal is a good idea it will be here before Christmas. Thermal is very yesterday hardly looking at the spectrum.
