We are making a Autonomous flier (quad rotor based) which will carry Sensor system(LIDAR,INS etc) and a camera; and is capable of obstacle avoidance and precise hovering.We have narrowed our search for a quad rotor flier to 'X-3D- Scientific' as our base model of which we will change motors,propellers and battery.We plan to change the motors with Hacker A 20-22l outrunner and the standard propeller of 10*4.5 and also the battery with a 5000/6000 mah for higher flight time (about 10 mins).Certain queries:1. Will the flier with new configuration and total weight of 1433gm produce enough thrust (about 1.8kgs) ?2.Is X-3d best one around?3.Do we have better motors (producing more thrust ) ?4. Is 6000 mAh correct estimation of the Battery type?

  • Hi, when it comes to electric flight you really need to be able to get hold of real data on your power plant setup.
    You need to choose the correct propeller/rotors to give you the most efficient thrust for a safe voltage/current for your motor. The only reliable way to do this is to experiment and measure yourself. From what I have seen the Watts Up watt meter which displays V/A/W/mAh is the best way to go (you can run your best setup for say 5 minutes and then derive the best battery setup based on the mAh readout!) . You will also need something to drive your ESC and also read your RPM for you too. The GWS Servo Tester does that nicely in one package. The only thing missing is an electronic scale to give you your thrust readout.
    I just spent a lot of cash to get into RC starting with the Twinstar II. I'm using A123 LiFePo4 batteries which although slightly heavy will outlast LiPo and give you 15mins charge time without damage. You can get them in 1100 and 2300mAh (realistic weight of a 3cell 9.9v-10.8v wired pack is 240gm).
    If you have cash to burn then maybe LiPo is for you.

  • Interesting project. I have also multirotor UAV project under work but it's very beginning and i gather information about motors and battery's, and i'm trying to find information about payloads and flight times but i have not yet find right sources of information.

    I cannot say for sure if the motors will be better than what you have but I can say that I am very happy with the ones I put in my Twinstar.

    Very well made and that inspires confidence over cheaper motors. I have exactly the same 20 22Ls.
