still I'd wish they would catch a few of these idiots and make proper examples of them - both this as well as the HP laser idiots.
They'd sure get a one-way trip behind the boathouse from me any day.
P.S. -- We'll never stop foolish acts by morons. As frustrating as these things are, they will still happen from time-to-time. Again, I think this is ultimately realized by the rule-makers.
I guess it's natural to think these kinds of incidents will lead to one kind of ban or another, but I really think cooler heads will prevail. Radio control and free flight models have been flying for decades. Accidents have happened, yet the hobby goes on. This particular incident doesn't seem remotely connected with UAVs. It appears to be the deliberate act of a moron. Assuming at least some of our leaders still have rational minds, this, and other incidents, will be seen for what they are, foolish acts by a few individuals, or simple accidents.
The cynical side of this is that hobbies are big business. While some new rules and/or restrictions might come of these things, outright bans are unlikely. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
The broadcast is Nine News in Australia, the plane is a pacificblue.com 737 that regularly does the Tasman route between Australia and New Zealand. I think CASA and NZCAA (the FAA of this part of the world) will come down hard on UAV / model aircraft operators over this. I think Oz is trying to or already has banned those high powered lasers because people are shining them at pilots when they are on finals.
As an aside, here's a draft of some UAV legislation being written here in NZ.
At least the 2nd near miss since last year. There was 1 where passengers photographed it & pretty sure there was another, but internet memory is pretty short. How many economic stimulus packages did we get since 2007?
Fortunately, if any of U think U can get famous by flying near an airport & uploading it to Goo Tube, fuggedaboutit. The best you'll get is a shaky blurry video of a shaky blurry video on a computer monitor. Here's the embedded version.
