UDB Waypoint editor

Team,
I've just added a new tool to both the SVN repository and the project downloads. It's a simple web page that you can download and use to graphically edit waypoints using Google Maps. A few of us have been using the alpha version for the last couple of months and felt it was ready to share with a wider audience.

You can download the file from the project's featured downloads, udb_waypoints.html or from SVN in the newly created "waypoint_editor" folder under the tools folder. Either way, save the file on your local machine somewhere and then open it with your favorite web browser. From there, you can choose to copy in your own waypoints file, or start with the sample waypoints pattern provided.

Modifying waypoints is pretty simple, either click on an empty space on the map to add a new waypoint, or click on an existing waypoint to edit it. Waypoints can have any of the supported flags assigned to them, set their altitude individually, and have their camera view point set individually. This version of the tool supports both absolute and relative waypoints. When the home waypoint (with the center dot on it) is moved, the tool will try to save your home location as a cookie (or using local storage if your browser is HTML 5 compliant) and restore it the next time you load the page. If you are using the relatively new "FIXED_ORIGIN_LOCATION" option in your waypoints, the tool will automatically use that as your home location.

As with almost everything in this project, your feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Adam Barrow

Update August 25th: Sorry for the confusion with the first version -- I've uploaded version 1.4.1 (check the title of the page to see what version you have) that should work much better. It has been updated to use Google Maps API v3 (v2 seems to be broken for some newer browsers) and I also fixed some issues with cross-browser cookie handling. Thanks again for all your feedback. Please let me know either here or on the UAVdevboard mailing list if you have any other feedback.

  • Adam,

it seems I'm the only one unable to have it working :(
I'm using previous, slightly modified, versions instead. They work well I don't understand why (the latest isn't). Btw. the actual version is working on a pc with W7, but unfortunately this is not the pc I use for those things (XP, sp3, Chrome, Firefox, IE8).

    Best regards,

    Ric
  • Nice !

Adam has updated the version in the SVN repository to 1.4.1 and that works fine for me. Solves all the problems with this version. I expect he'll be posting it in the downloads section soon.
  • Its alright billu bhaiya, we will wait till it works. Thanks to you and adam , apart from ur busy schedules you r doing a lot for community. Its quite useful tool, so it tempted me to try it at the earliest.

    Hi Morli,

I tried to attach the beta version to this post, but something is blocking it, so I emailed it to you instead.

    Hi Viky,

Adam is working the problem. There was a beta version of the tool that worked ok, but had some rough edges. In polishing off the rough edges in preparing for a release, Adam apparently created some new bugs.

The released version does not work for me, either. No map displayed. The beta version was working just fine on my computer, so I sent it to Adam so he could compare it with the released version.

It is my understanding that Adam's paying job keeps him rather busy, so it may take him a while to fix it. Adam is like most of the UDB developers in that respect, he is a volunteer. I told him when he released the UDB waypoint editor tool that "No good deed goes unpunished."

I am sure that he will make an announcement when he re-releases it.

I accept the responsibility for this. My exchange with Chris Anderson prompted Adam to hurry up with the release.

    So, I apologize to everyone.

    Sorry.

    Best regards,
    Bill

    Hi Chris,

I think that some of the changes that Adam made UDB waypoint editor to get it ready for release are causing some problems for you and me.

The released version does not work at all on my computer, whereas the "beta" version still works just fine.

So, Chris, I don't think your are doing anything wrong. I think that Adam still has to make a few more revisions to get the tool working on computers other than his own.

    Best regards,
    Bill

I can't seem to drag the home location, and when I add waypoints by clicking they're not showing on the map. I've tried in Firefox and Chrome...what am I doing wrong?
