Surprised picoc dropped off the radar already for scripting. It works quite well as long as you run it in its own process.

This podcast is all about the ArduPilot 2.5 and 3.0 code and all the changes in them. Jason rewrote the code and he explains the new architecture, features and roadmap for next versions.
